What is Periodontics?

At its simplest, periodontics is the study of the supporting structures of teeth, including the gums, alveolar bone, periodontal ligament, and cementum. Periodontists are dental specialists who focus on the diagnosis and treatment of periodontal disease. Periodontic dentistry is the branch of dentistry that specifically deals with the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of periodontal diseases.

Periodontal diseases are infections of the gums that can eventually lead to tooth loss. They are caused by plaque, a sticky film of bacteria that forms on teeth. If plaque is not removed, it can harden into calculus (tartar). Plaque and calculus irritate the gums, causing them to become inflamed. This inflammation is called gingivitis. Gingivitis is a mild form of periodontitis, but if left untreated, it can progress into a more serious condition.

Periodontitis is a more advanced form of periodontal disease that can destroy the gums and bone that support your teeth. In periodontitis, plaque and calculus irritate the gums and cause them to pull away from the teeth. This creates pockets between the gums and teeth that become infected. As periodontitis progresses, more gum tissue and bone are destroyed. The teeth may eventually become loose and need to be removed.

Fortunately, periodontics can help to prevent or treat periodontal disease. A variety of treatments are available, depending on the severity of the disease.
